The client’s brief was to unlock the full potential of both the site and the existing house, while retaining as much of the original structure and character as possible. Every decision was guided by a desire to enhance the home’s functionality, light, and sense of space without compromising its essence.
The proposal focused on opening up the rear of the house to capture expansive views across the garden. The garage was relocated from one side of the property to the other, allowing for the creation of a large, light-filled kitchen family room with vistas to both the front and rear gardens. A new first floor was added to accommodate four additional bedrooms, providing the family with generous, well-considered living spaces.
The new upper structure is crafted from a timber frame, offering a lightweight solution for the existing building, high levels of thermal insulation, and a construction process that is both efficient and precise. The front elevation is clad in cedar, a material that requires minimal maintenance while ageing gracefully over time, subtly changing colour to enhance the building’s character.
Throughout the project, close collaboration with WS Planning & Architecture ensured that every element, from design to construction, was carefully considered, creating a home that is both ambitious and entirely in tune with the family’s lifestyle.
