The client approached us with a clear vision: a contemporary extension that would complement the character of the existing Victorian house.
Situated within the Conservation Area of Winchester, the property required careful consideration and collaboration with the Conservation Officer from the outset.
Several meetings were held to explore both traditional and contemporary approaches, ultimately agreeing upon a design that balanced modernity with respect for the original architecture.
The primary challenge was ensuring that the extension did not overpower the existing house in height, while fulfilling the client’s desire for a striking contemporary addition.
Multiple options were presented to demonstrate to the Conservation Officer why a traditional style would not work in harmony with the Victorian context.
Close collaboration with the Conservation and Planning Officers was key to achieving a successful outcome.
The final design features a shallow-sloping zinc roof and a projecting rendered first-floor bay window set within a brick façade. This element provides shading for the ground-floor bi-fold doors while creating visual interest on the front elevation. The extension accommodates a dining room and study on the ground floor, with a master bedroom, dressing room, and ensuite on the first floor.
Once planning permission was secured, we prepared the Building Regulations drawings and application, followed by detailed Working Drawings and a Tender Pack for prospective builders.
Throughout the process, we guided the client carefully, helping them appoint a local builder and overseeing the construction to ensure that the design intent was faithfully executed.
Regular site meetings between client, builder, and architect maintained close oversight, while monthly certificates confirmed the valuations issued by the builder.
The result is a contemporary, carefully considered extension that sits in perfect harmony with the original Victorian house, enhancing both its functionality and its presence within the Conservation Area.
